Fresh Stone
Music by Piers Connor Kennedy
Performed by the Choir of St Peter's College, Oxford
Directed by Quintin Beer
The title ‘Fresh stone’ comes from Rob Yates’s poem ‘Bailey’, a poem written for the opening of the newest of St Peter’s buildings, Castle Bailey Quad, and set to music by Piers for that occasion. This recording acknowledges our College’s proud musical history (of which I have the privilege of being the present custodian) whilst paving the way for fresh musical talent and ideas.
The music of Piers Connor Kennedy is affecting in all sorts of ways: emotionally direct, narratively compelling, imaginatively rich, harmonically supple, and deeply dutiful towards the writers of the texts. Piers, himself a St Peter’s alumnus, and more recently as our Associate Composer, understands what makes students tick. He has a craftsmanship as a composer that produces stylistically varied music which is an utter joy physically to sing. I hope you will hear as much joy in our sound as we had in making the recording.
